What is the Devil? Most think of the Devil to be a horned demon but what if the Devil is more subtle than that? I believe that the Devil is NOT that obvious. When I think of the Devil I do not necessarily think of a horned ugly demon instead I think of the obscenely rich and greedy. I remember when I was at primary school and my headmaster (a good teacher I always liked him) told a story about hell and heaven.
He said that a man went to hell and heaven upon entering hell he sees a huge room with a huge table in the middle of it. The table is full of delicious food the man instantly believes he is in heaven. Around the huge table are hundreds of people waiting to eat. But when the waiters bring out the knives and forks the man notices that the knives and forks and gigantic and impossible to eat with. Because of this everybody around the table begins to fight over the food. They make a huge mess and waste food as they drop it all over the floor in an attempt to eat their fair share.
By the time the meal and fight for food has finished some people around the table have managed to collect huge amounts of food others have none. Because of this the hungry attack and fight for more as the people that managed to gather food fight to defend the huge amounts of food that they have managed to collect. The fight leads to death, chaos and hunger as only a few manage to survive.
Upon entering heaven the man again sees a huge table full of delicious food just like in hell. And just like in hell the waiters bring out gigantic knives and forks, the man rolls his eyes and quietly says to himself “not again.”
“Eat” the waiters say and the man expects another riot for food. But this time its different. Instead of fighting for the food and wasting much of the food in the process the people begin to work together and assist each other. This minimizes the waste and they all eat their fair share.
This is not a 100% accurate version of the story he told because its been nearly thirty years since I heard it, but this story has always stayed in my mind and as I grew up I began to realize that we the people have the ability to make earth heavenly or hellish unfortunately we seem to have choose the latter.
