I am only writing this blog due to witnessing my grandmother suffering in the hospital yesterday. She was confused, frail, weak and barely a shell of her old self. There were times that we could actually talk to her and there were other times when she was far gone that it was almost impossible to talk to her. To see somebody that you love and have known your whole life in that condition is heartbreaking. What’s worse is the powerlessness that we have, I believe my Nan would happily finish her life at the moment and one injection is all that would take. She has been sad and lonely since my Granddad died about five years ago.
I believe doctors should have the right to have given her the option of not being allowed to go this far and suffer like this when she was of sound mind. To do that now might be a problem because from what I hear today her mind has deteriorated rapidly overnight and now she is not even recognizing close family that she sees daily and has no idea where she is.
I find a society that lets mothers have a abortions at will but does not allow mercy by injection a strange one. After seeing my Nan in the condition she is in and hearing that she is getting worse I would definitely support anything that allows less suffering. Obviously there should be procedures to take and ideally the one facing the injection should agree to it before hand and have they chance to change their mind at anytime.
My Nan now has no idea where she is, what is going on or even any memory of who her own family are, she has a broken hip and has barely eaten or drunk for three weeks. I hope her suffering ends soon.
